 //Lothal : Ancient History// //Series- 1// Lothal was one of the southernmost cities of Indus Valley Civilization. Lothal is famous for the discovery of several ruins of Indus Valley Civilization. It was the port town of Harappa . The city is 4500 years old and was discovered in 1954 during an excavation by the Archeological Survey Of  India. L othal is a combination of two words; Loth and thal, which in Gujarati means ‘the mound of the dead. The city was inhabited during 3700 BCE and was a thriving trading port.   It was discovered in 1954, excavated in 1955-1960 by S R Rao of Archeological Survey Of  India. Lothal is located 85km from Ahmedabad. It is an  important archeological site because of its dockyard which is used for  business purposes during the ancient times.
